Project preparation

A better brief. A better beginning.

Gather the information that makes an electronics project easier to assess. If something is not final, flag it as an open decision rather than leaving it unstated.

01 / Assembly

PCB assembly

  • Gerber and drill files with board revision
  • Bill of materials with manufacturer part numbers
  • Pick-and-place data and assembly drawings
  • Quantity, component supply plan and test requirements

02 / Integration

Box build & integration

  • Mechanical drawings and enclosure details
  • PCBA details and component list
  • Wiring diagrams and assembly instructions
  • Acceptance criteria and packaging requirements

03 / Design

PCB layout & design

  • Schematic and component libraries
  • Board outline and mechanical constraints
  • Layer stack-up and routing requirements
  • Fabricator rules and required output formats

04 / Mechanical

Mechanical enclosures

  • Board dimensions and mounting locations
  • Connector and user-interface positions
  • Operating environment and material preferences
  • Drawings, CAD files and quantity requirements

05 / Engineering

Engineering solutions

  • Product brief and functional requirements
  • Existing schematics, firmware or prototypes
  • Power, interface and environmental constraints
  • Validation goals and acceptance criteria

06 / Sourcing

Component procurement

  • BOM with exact manufacturer part numbers
  • Required quantities and delivery priorities
  • Approved substitutions or no-substitution rules
  • Traceability and documentation requirements

Before sharing design files

Keep file revisions consistent, mark the latest approved version, and identify any sensitive information. Agree confidentiality and a secure transfer method before sending proprietary design files. Timing and price depend on a reviewed scope, quantity, material availability and required testing.
